25 minutes from Old River Road. The second largest granite dome in the country, sitting half buried in the hills near Fredericksburg. It's a half mile hike to the top with 360 degree views from the summit. Go late in the day, about thirty minutes before sunset, and you'll understand why the Tonkawa believed the rock talked. Scientists say it's the granite fissures cooling at the end of a hot day. Either way, you should come hear it for yourself.
The Hike:
Half mile to the summit. All skill levels welcome. Rock climbing and bouldering routes available for those who want more than the trail.
Worth Knowing:
The park hits capacity on weekends and holidays. Reserve your day pass in advance through Texas Parks and Wildlife.

25 to 30 minutes from Old River Road. A German heritage town founded in the 1840s with a Main Street full of wine tasting rooms, independent shops, art galleries, and restaurants worth the drive. The surrounding area is known for peach orchards, lavender farms, and some of the best winery hopping in Texas. You can spend a full day here and still want to come back.
Wine Country:
Over 50 wineries and tasting rooms within a short drive of downtown. Plan a route or just follow the signs.
Downtown:
Shops, galleries, and restaurants line Main Street. Walk it once to window shop, walk it again to eat.
Peak bloom runs mid March through April with wildflowers continuing into May. The Hill Country landscape turns into a sea of blue every spring, drawing photographers and visitors from across Texas. The best spots change year to year, so ask the locals or call the Texas Department of Transportation Wildflower Hotline at 800 452 9292 for current conditions.
When to Come:
Mid March through April for peak bluebonnets. April is the sweet spot. Book your site early because spring weekends fill fast.
Photo Tip:
Early morning light is best. The fields along the back roads between Kerrville and Fredericksburg are where the locals go.

15 to 20 minutes from Old River Road. The Medina River winds through tunnels of towering bald cypress trees on its way to Bandera. It doesn't get the crowds that flock to the Guadalupe, which means you have most of it to yourself. Clear spring fed water, limestone canyon scenery, and a mix of calm stretches and moderate rapids for all skill levels.
Kayaking and Tubing:
Rentals and guided trips available through local outfitters. Float trips run a couple of hours depending on the section and the water level.
Why the Medina:
Fewer crowds than the Guadalupe, better scenery, and close enough to be back at your site by dinner.
20 to 25 minutes west of Old River Road. Known as the Cowboy Capital of the World. This is where you go for dude ranches, horseback riding, western heritage, and a pace of life that makes Kerrville feel fast. Small town Texas at its most authentic.
Dude Ranches:
Several working ranches offer day rides and multi day experiences. Good for families, couples, and anyone who wants to sit on a horse and forget about their phone.
The Town:
Honky tonks, rodeos, and a main street that looks like it hasn't changed in 50 years. That's the point.

10 to 15 minutes from Old River Road. Your home base town. Kerrville sits along the Guadalupe River with art galleries, riverside parks, local restaurants, and a downtown that's easy to walk. It's where you go for groceries, a sit down dinner, or an afternoon along the water.
Riverside:
The Guadalupe River runs right through town. Parks, walking trails, and spots to sit and do nothing line the banks.
Downtown:
Local restaurants, coffee shops, and galleries. Small enough to walk, interesting enough to spend an afternoon.
About 30 minutes north of Old River Road in the heart of the Hill Country. A collection of vintage and classic motorcycles from around the world dating from the 1910s to modern. The surrounding roads are some of the best motorcycling in Texas, which is half the reason people make the trip.
The Collection:
Rare and classic machines spanning over a century. Themed displays, detailed history, and a gift shop.
The Ride There:
The roads between Old River Road and the museum are some of the most scenic in the Hill Country. Take the long way. You won't regret it.
